Oktoberfest 2009!

Oktoberfest; Reputedly the world’s largest beer-fest is back once again!

As tradition has it, from the 19th of  September to the 3rd of October this year, Munich will play host to the 16 day long celebration attracting  over 6 Million excited visitors from all over the world; all of whom are sure to be  knocking back some of Munich’s  specially brewed beer!

BUT, don’t worry if beer is not your thing as Oktoberfest has much more to offer!

On Saturday the 19th you can take pleasure in watching the glamorous opening parade which sees tent proprietors mounted upon brewery wagons, horse and carriages, followed by brass, folk and musical bands, all of whom are dressed in traditional attire. The men sporting colourful Lederhosen and the women, Dirndl dresses.

Still in touch with its traditional roots the fairground offers old  favourites such as the  Ferris wheel, Carousel and Roller coaster,  but for those who prefer the thrill of being thrown upside down and all around, each year organisers add  new attractions to get your blood pumping!   This year the new ride being ´The Tower´.

nice-food-oktober-fest-150xAs food is one of the things for food for which the festival is internationally renowned; Oktoberfest serves up a feast of typically hearty Bavarian cuisine.  Offering mouth-watering choices such as roast chickens, pork sausages and potato dumplings covered in red cabbage and apple. Plus, for those who have a sweet tooth, there are a variety of tasty treats, such as the famous black forest cake, and heart shaped gingerbread cookies on which you are able to write a personal message. There are also alternative vegetarian options on offer.

I found this very informative and eye catching. I didn’t know there was a fairground and the food sounds tempting. It was also a great help having the link to your hotels at the end of the blog.

Terrie – The food is indeed very good. As a Bavarian I may be biased, but Bavarian cooking is well-known in Germany and usually what’s served in German restaurants abroad. Try the delicious pork filet in a rich beer sauce and potato dumplings. And for desert, don’t forget the delicious Kaiserschmarrn, sort of like scrambled pancakes with a plum sauce!
