Amalfi Coast – indulge in “dolce far niente”

By Carlota Nelson | 10:30

The Amalfi Coast is the epitome of quintessential Mediterranean. Winding narrow roads, enchanting little villages perched on terraced cliffs, scented lemon groves and the vast blue horizon always present. Amalfi has inspired writers, musicians and artists since the 1900´s.  In the 1920s and 1930s, it became a popular holiday destination for the British upper class and aristocracy. Declared by the UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, today this  small seaside town set around a small cove with just over 5,000 inhabitants  is famous for its fine beach, restaurants, cafes and shops and is considered one of the world´s top destinations for jet setters, experienced travellers and couples who want to bask in the luxury of dolce far niente”, the sweetness of doing absolutely nothing.

Clinging to a cliff 80 meters above sea level, just outside the village of Amalfi, approximately 1 and ½ hour drive by private transfer from Naples airport, is our five-star historic Grand Hotel Convento di Amalfi. It is one of the most significant monuments of the entire Coast and it´s beauty has long been a source of inspiration for painters, photographers and travellers from around the world. Converted into a hotel in 1882, it has had a long history of exceptional hospitality to royalty, aristocracy and celebrities. Among the most celebrated visitors were composer Richard Wagner and playwright Henrik Ibsen, both of whom completed works while staying in Amalfi. Housed in a 12th-century monastery, the hotel includes a 13th-century Norman-Arab cloister. Here, you can’t help but feel special.

All rooms feature views of the sea, terracotta floors and elegant marble baths. Some rooms feature a balcony or a terrace with a breath-taking view of the coast and the “Passeggiata dei Monaci”.

Without having to leave the hotel premises, you can enjoy a breath-taking walk overlooking the coastline. Awarded with a Certificate of Excellence, the hotel also features the “Dei Cappuccini“ restaurant where you´ll continue to admire the stunning views while having a meal al fresco in its spectacular terrace.  Are you daydreaming of lying down and taking in the most spectacular view in the world from the best possible place?  Dream no more. Just make it happen by the infinity pool while you enjoy a glass of limoncello, the liquor that the Amalfi coast and its lemons are famous for. Get a massage and a beauty treatment in the wellbeing centre or soak in the Turkish bath.

Had enough pampering for a while? The Amalfi coast has so much to see you´ll have a hard time deciding where to go first. The Paper Museum in the old 13th century paper mill, the 9th century Cathedral of Saint Andrea, a romantic ride to Positano or Capri… If you´re truly energized, why not take a cooking class, go horseback riding, sailing or diving? Private boat trips are also available to take you exploring the coastline and the neighbour islands. Our quality staff will be happy to arrange any activity you wish.

Make sure you check the special offer which includes: Breakfast buffet at “Dei Cappuccini” restaurant, welcome drink on the terrace, a  3-course candlelight dinner (inclusive of a selection of drinks), 1 Spa treatment at our Wellness Centre (duration: 50 mins.) per person, free use of our fitness room and free access to the beach.
