Enjoy a summer night at an open air cinema

One of the many outdoor cinemas in Vienna

Are open air cinemas just a thing for the 50s nostalgia? No way, we like outdoor cinemas more than ever!

As cool as it is to do all kind of stuff with your smartphone, watching a film in four inches is not. When it comes to films we like sharing it the oldest fashion way possible, with actual friends made out of flesh and blood -the more, the merrier.

Every European city that has some sort of film or music festival going on during the Summer tributes one part of its program to outdoor cinemas, but in Vienna they go all the way. There are five arts festivals from June to September in the capital of Austria and all of them display giant projecting screens for Vieneses to enjoy.

The Music Film Festival Vienna is dedicated this 2013 to Wagner and Verdi, who would have turned 200 in 2014, and ‘Des Ring des Nibelungen’, ‘Nabucco’ or ‘Rigoletto’ operas will be displayed in front of the illuminated City Hall along classic ballet films like Nureyev performing the Swan Lake (1962). They will also be peeking into pop music projecting the film ‘Pavarotti: the Duets’ and inviting Rod Stewart. You don’t need to bring any food or drinks along with you because there are many incredible deli food stalls around.

Vienna’s outdoor cinemas cover every single type of film. You want international popular titles? Hit the Arena Summer Cinema. Into cult films? Cinema on the Roof is for you (in German). But since we are in Austria, why don’t get our noses into their film-making? Don’t miss ‘Cinema like Never Before’ (in German) and the so popular ‘Cinema under the Stars’ (in German). They only projects films in OV but Vieneses are very nice people and though they’ll have you reading subtitles, free comfy blankets are provided with the ticket. Remember our cool summer deals for visiting Vienna.

Open-air cinemas are also huge in Berlin and you can choose over a dozen different festivals to attend. They show the same pattern as in Vienna: international blockbusters, cult films and local productions. All of them mixed with music bands playing live and currywurst stalls everywhere. And beer, of course.

If you are on a late minute trip, try booking at ‘Rehberge open-air Cinema’; it’s the largest one with more than 1,500 viewing spots. But if you want the real underground deal in Berlin, hit the ‘Pompeji Open-Air Cinema Ostkreuz‘. Just 80 seats in a burnt building (hence the Pompeii name) but it’s the latest cool thing to do in Berlin. So cool we don’t want you to miss it –book now and enjoy these hot summer deals.

Northern Europe summer can be mild but if you want a warm summer night assured, you got to hit the Mediterranean. Choose the ever beautiful Barcelona to enjoy a truly magical experience. Barcelona open-air cinema takes places in Sala Montjuic, a popular performing venue on Montjuic Hill, that means you’ll be watching a film against the background of the castle, city night lights and the sea.

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday until August 7th, it’s the perfect getaway from Barcelona’s crowd for just 6€. Enjoy American blockbusters and classic films plus live concerts and short films before the projection. Food stalls are all about nachos and burgers so considered booking online for the deli picnic. Don’t worry about the drinks though because fresh cava is sold on the spot.
